MAKE WAVES! is an all volunteer non-profit organization formed in 2007 to find a solution to the looming closure of the only public pool in Jefferson County. The existing pool located in the Mountain View Commons and built in the 1960s is deteriorating and requires an annual public subsidy from the City of Port Townsend to sustain operations. Investigation of various facilities throughout the Pacific Northwest revealed that centers with only aquatic amenities all require a public subsidy, but that facilities with integrated aquatic and dry-side amenities can sustain operation solely from affordable user fees, if the capital costs of construction are not financed. MAKE WAVES! seeks to raise the capital funds from donors and grants, build a facility on publicly owned land, and donate it to the community for operation as a publicly accessible, affordable aquatic recreation center for all the citizens of Jefferson County.

"To develop a multipurpose aquatic, recreation, and fitness center that is affordable, financially sustainable, politically supportable, and serves the needs of all the members of our community for generations to come."

Alliances
As part of the Healthy Youth Coalition, MAKE WAVES! will help make a difference in the lives of our kids and our community. 49% of the 2009 entries into the Mountain View Pool, an average of 1,444 per month, were youths taking swim lessons, recreating, swimming competitively and participating in other activities including special needs sessions. The new aquatic recreation center will be the replacement for this deteriorating community resource. Kids will have direct, no-transfer bus access to an adult supervised drug-free facility located next to Jefferson County's transit hub.
